Lanarkshire cyber business thriving after starting life as a University project

A business that had its beginnings at New College Lanarkshire is still going strong throughout the pandemic.

Ascent Cyber started as a university start-up by students in 2019 and has only grown stronger since.

The three employees at Ascent all met while studying at college in Motherwell, going on to start the business together at university.

And that includes Wishaw’s Stephanie Hill, who has been at the core of the cybersecurity firm since its beginnings.

Ascent provides cybersecurity services to small and medium-sized businesses, providing much-needed security and safety in a digital age.

Stephanie told Lanarkshire Live : “Since leaving university we have continued with Ascent and it is going great for us.

“We did struggle when COVID hit and we had to really change our business model to suit the current state of the world.

“We had to start working remotely with businesses rather than going on-site to assess their needs. But this means we can now help lots more businesses, which has paid off for us.

“We also offer a subscription service now, as we realised the businesses we cater for are likely struggling financially due to lockdowns.

“This means businesses who really need the security can afford it at a reasonable cost.”

As well as running the business, Stephanie and colleague Malgorzata Borowiecka have been lecturing at the college where they first met, teaching the next generation of cybersecurity workers.

“It has been great to get back to the college and get more people into this industry,” Stephanie added.
