Newmains and District Senior Citizens Lunch Club was awarded the cash support its work with those over 50 in our community.
The group will use the money to provide transport to and from the bi-weekly lunch club and provide opportunities to enjoy trips and outings throughout the next two years.
The club has been running for 60 plus years and is run by and for the members. It aims to provide a friendly, welcoming environment where people can enjoy a nutritious meal and some good company twice a week and give the older members of the community the opportunity to enjoy a few day trips throughout the year and a Christmas treat.
The group, who meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon, provide a selection of meals including vegetarian and vegan, supplied through North Lanarkshire Council’s catering service.
After lunch there is the opportunity to enjoy a chat over tea and biscuits or a wee game of prize bingo.
Lunch club member Annette Turnbull said: “We’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognized our group in this way.
“Now, thanks to National Lottery players we will be able to continue to provide a valuable service to the people of Newmains and the wider area.
“Without the support of The National Lottery the lunch club would have folded after more than 60 years.
“At the same time, the group will be able to reduce isolation and loneliness within our community and help its members to build relationships with others experiencing the same challenges.”
The National Lottery Community Fund recently launched its new strategy, ‘It starts with community’, which will underpin its efforts to distribute at least £4 billion of National Lottery funding by 2030.
As part of this, the funder has four key missions, which are to support communities to come together, be environmentally sustainable, help children and young people thrive and enable people to live healthier lives.
National Lottery players raise over £30 million a week for good causes across the UK. Thanks to them, last year The National Lottery Community Fund was able to distribute over half a billion pounds (£615.4 million) of life-changing funding to communities.
