Social enterprise company Socialtrack have teamed up with Cycling Scotland and the Scottish Government to gain approximately £50,000 in funding through The Access to Bikes Fund.
The scheme provides funding and support to organisations requesting bikes, including adaptive bikes, for young people meeting the eligibility criteria.
Socialtrack’s Dan Scott visited Clyde Valley High School to hand over a selection of bikes with other trips to Coltness High and Thornlie Primary planned in the next few weeks.
Dan said: “The kids have got fantastic new bikes and helmets and they can’t wait to get started.
“Bikes are more expensive than they used to be so for a lot of the kids it will be the first bike they have had for a while.
“What the kids have told us is that they are wanting to get an explore areas of Wishaw.
“We obviously have the pump track at Wishawhill Wood and a few of them have said they would like to come down to that but it’s mainly to get them out and get active.”
Cycling Scotland is working with partner organisations to increase affordable access to bikes for children and young people, supporting independent travel, reducing inequalities and improving health.
Project proposals are sought from local authorities, schools, community groups and third sector organisations working with young people who require access to bikes.
Dan added: “We want kids to have a healthier lifestyle and to use their bikes when they are older without using a car.
“If they can get active at this then it can set them for later in life.”
