Rotary Clubs of Lanarkshire and Hamilton Accies distribute hundreds of winter coats to people in need

Rotary Clubs of Lanarkshire have collected more than 1600 winter coats for those in need across the county.

Working in conjunction with Hamilton Accies Football Club, members of the Hamilton and Motherwell and Wishaw Rotary Clubs worked tirelessly collecting donations of good quality coats and heavy jackets for their ‘Wrap Up Lanarkshire’ campaign.

Now, those volunteering with the Wrap Up Lanarkshire initiative are in the process of distributing 1651 good quality pre-loved and brand new winter coats and jackets, helping to give a bit of warmth to some of the most vulnerable across the community, including homeless shelters, refugee centres, children’s centres, organisations supporting the elderly, and other charities.

Colin McGowan, chief executive of Hamilton Academical Football Club, who gifted office space to the Rotary Club to sort and organise the coats said: “It’s been an absolutely amazing response to the Wrap Up Lanarkshire campaign.

“The Football Club along with Hamilton Accies Community Trust and our children’s charity Blameless joined forces with both of these Rotary Clubs on the Wrap up Lanarkshire campaign as we felt this was a fantastic idea in helping those who need it most at the time of the year.

“We are delighted with the response and a big well done to Rotary Clubs of Lanarkshire on such an amazing and successful initiative.

“The collections have now ceased, but we are certain that due to its success the campaign will be repeated again next year.”

Collection points were set up throughout North and South Lanarkshire, and members of the clubs sorted through the donations every few days.

Callan Dick, vice president of Mothwell and Wishaw Rotary, told Lanarkshire Live : “All of the coats are now being passed to organisations as previously mentioned, who are best placed to identify individuals who would benefit from them.

“Many of these may be small local charities who don’t get much recognition, and we would be glad to hear of any organisation which could make use of coats as we come into winter.

“Thank you to everyone who contributed to make it a success.”
