Strathclyde Country Park

Strathclyde Country Park

Strathclyde Country Park sits on the edge of Motherwell and Hamilton in North Lanarkshire, Scotland — a sprawling green space of around 400 hectares (roughly 1,100 acres) centered on the man-made Strathclyde Loch.

Strathclyde Loch is the heart of the park and has hosted major international rowing and watersports events — including competitions at the 1986 Commonwealth Games, the water-based portions of Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, and the 2018 European Championships.

For visitors, the park offers a wide variety of recreational options: woodland and wetland walks, cycling paths (including bike hire), water activities (rowing, sailing, pedalos, etc.), sports pitches, nature-watching, and even a dedicated campsite.

Beyond its natural and recreational appeal, the park also carries layers of history — its grounds include the remains of a Roman fort and bathhouse from ancient times, and the landscape incorporates parts of what was once the estate lands of a grand palace long gone.

Overall, Strathclyde Country Park blends scenic nature, active-living opportunities, family-friendly amenities and heritage — making it a beloved green escape for locals and a top destination for outdoor fun and relaxation in the Central Belt of Scotland.
