Two men to stand trial over ‘drugs death’ of young Motherwell mum after ‘supplying her cocaine’

TWO men are to stand trial accused of killing a young mum after allegedly supplying her with cocaine.

Barry McAuley, 39, and Martin Stewart, 33, are said to have “recklessly and unlawfully” given the “potentially lethal” class A drug to Rebecca Tollan on July 14 and 15, 2019.

It is said to have happened at the Railway Tavern pub in Motherwell and at a house in Bellshill, both South Lanarkshire.

The culpable homicide charge states 23 year-old Rebecca died after taking the drug.

Stewart, of Viewpark, North Lanarkshire, faces separate charges of being concerned in the supply of cocaine and cannabis.

McAuley, also of Bellshill, features on one those cocaine charges.

The case was called today at the High Court in Glasgow, where lawyers for the pair pleaded not guilty on their behalf.

Lord Arthurson fixed a trial due to begin in November next year.

Both McAuley and Stewart remain on bail meantime.

We previously told how mercy crews raced to the house in 2019 following an alert that she and two others had fallen ill.

But Rebecca couldn’t be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other people who fell ill were checked over at nearby Monklands Hospital.

In a poignant tribute, Rebecca’s dad Andrew, 57 — who runs the butcher’s where she worked — said: “She was reliable, honest and I can’t ever say that she let me down.

“She will be remembered as bubbly, happy and cheery.”

Rebecca had earlier posted social media snaps of newborn — gushing about her love for the tot.

And hours before she died, she shared a selfie captioned, ‘This maw is oooot x’.

Carter’s dad Graeme Robertson, 25, of Wishaw, said after her passing: “Nobody deserves anything like what life has gave us and took from you — nothing will ever be the same without you.

“Me and Carter are going to make you so proud. We love you mummy.”
