Woman dies after being hit by police van in Motherwell

A WOMAN has died after being hit by a police van in Lanarkshire last night. 

Emergency crews were scrambled to the scene in Motherwell at around 8.20pm in the town’s Merry Street.

The 58-year-old pedestrian was taken to the University Hospital Wishaw but was sadly pronounced dead a short time later. 

Her next of kin has been made aware and are being supported by specialist officers. 

The marked Ford Transit van was on routine duties at the time of the collision – it did not have blue lights or siren activated. 

The two cops in the vehicle were not injured. 

An investigation into the crash is being carried out by Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit.

It has also been referred to  the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC).

Police are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or have dashcam footage. 

Sergeant John Tait, of the Road Policing Unit in Motherwell, said: “Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has any other information to come forward.

“We would be particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam or private CCTV footage from the area.

“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting incident 3309 of 19 September.”
