The young child had been rushed to hospital on Christmas Eve after swallowing the button-type battery.

Medical staff tried to save him but the ingestion had done too much to little Hugh’s body and he died in his parents’ arms on Boxing Day.

In a tribute to their son, who loved motorbikes, his parents Hugh and Christine McMahon appealed to local bikers to escort his funeral procession and give him a fitting send off.

And hundreds of bikers travelled from all over Lanarkshire to escort the give the youngster the send off he deserved.

Trieda Hill, who owns the popular Route 66, organised the fitting tribute.

The cortege travelled from Motherwell Baptist Church to Hugh’s final resting place in Eastfields, Cumbernauld.

Both bikers and mourners were asked to wear something blue, like a blue ribbon, in Hugh’s memory.

Trieda shared images of the day on social media.

Posting on Facebook, she wrote: “What an absolute amazing turn out of bikers today for the little man.

“Between the 2 groups there must have been about 250-300 bikes.

“Thank you everyone who joined in today and a special thanks to the marshals.

“Hugh got an escort and a guard of honour and the pipes were heard in the heavens.
